Many websites are usually launched in a hurry by their owners, without giving much thought to properly optimizing their content. They do some quick research on the keywords they need to target based on the product they want to sell or the niche they want to write about.
More often than not, the resulting keywords they decide to use are what we call short-tail keywords, for example Nike shoes, coffee machines, strollers, etc.
These keyphrases receive millions of searches each month and, for a novice, light up dollar signs in their eyes.
The problem with this is that the keyword phrases they chose are not really buyer keywords but more generic and really not very good at optimizing their content. Moreover, they would be competing with large companies that have been around for decades and have a very large advertising budget.
You might think that more searches for a keyword phrase will increase traffic to your website or blog.
This couldn’t be further from the truth…!
However, in this article, I will explain to you why this is not the case and why you should use long tail keywords for SEO (search engine optimization).
Long tail keywords
Long-tail keywords are keyword phrases whose “tail” has contributed to the organic keywords entered into an online search that your site visitors use (or ask) when they search. Internet searches, whether they are simply looking for information or acquiring your services or products.
Short tail keyphrases are usually no longer than 1 or 2 words. Long tail keywords are usually much longer, but more importantly, they are also much more specific.
So! What is a long tail keyword?
As mentioned above, these keywords are phrases related to your main topic. Long-tail keywords have much less competition because people exclude them due to insufficient numbers of individuals searching for that particular set of words. They are much easier to target and consistently drive more buyer-friendly website traffic.
Unlike conventional keywords (coffee machines or Nike sneakers), long-tail keyword phrases are usually 3 or more words and usually no more than 5. They are a direct link to a keyword phrase that a individual would type into a search engine (Google, Bing or Yahoo) which will help narrow down their search. These keyword phrases are what you should focus on and use when optimizing your site content.
By using long-tail keywords, you will dramatically increase the likelihood that your potential customer will be a buyer. This is compared to using short tail keywords which will create more search results but not necessarily produce buyers.

Try typing ‘coffee machines’ into a search engine, it will return around 16 million sites, but if you type ‘isomac coffee machines Australia’, only 18,000 sites are returned. 18,000 search results is still a bit too high. Other experts may go so far as to say that returning 18,000 search results is OK. This shows that by using more specific keywords you can reduce competition and improve your chances.
My personal recommendation and preference is to look for search results in the region of three hundred to eight thousand. Now, that may not always be the case. If you look at local searches, those numbers would become irrelevant and you might only see a few hundred searches.
Generally, it’s not worth deciding when to use local searches below 50 searches per month.
It’s less hassle to get first page rankings as well as getting web traffic with long-tail keyword phrases, compared to less specific, short-tail keyword phrases.
